What colour, aroma, cleanliness and sample consistency can reveal before a commercial order is placed.

A whole-spice sample offers useful signals about how a lot has been sourced and handled. Evaluation should combine sensory observations with the agreed commercial specification.

Look beyond appearance

Colour and uniformity are useful first checks, but aroma, moisture, extraneous matter and broken material also influence suitability. The intended application should determine which attributes carry the most weight.

Compare like with like

Samples should be clearly identified and linked to a lot or sourcing period. When comparing suppliers, use the same sample size, lighting and assessment method so that decisions remain consistent.

For final orders, record accepted parameters in writing and agree how pre-shipment checks will be reported.
